“W

hy is it that, despite your reputation as the best intelligence officer in the Hegemony, you cannot locate this mystery ship called the Alba Varden?” Katlo posed to Tisla. “You have chased these ghosts to Olympus, but you still have not located them. Perhaps you have drawn a wrong conclusion along the way?”

Tisla could tell Katlo was mocking her, if only to motivate her. She made sure not to give him the satisfaction of getting a rise out of her. “That was the only useable information I could retrieve from the mind of one Rats Gleason. There is no logic as to why they chose the itinerary they followed. They wanted to eat and insisted on illegal food, then acquired an illegal natural animal as a . . . pet?”

“Do not sass me, ingrate! I have reviewed your report and all I see is conjecture, speculation, and assumptions. Stop with your wild hypotheses and get some information we can act on.”

Tisla fought a smile; now she was getting under Katlo’s skin. “That is all I have to go on: a hunch. At first, I did not believe Gleason because I could not find any trace of the individuals he was tracking, but in his mind, their faces were clear. He saw them just as clearly as I see you now, and he watched as they stowed away on a harvester and showed interest in cargo submarines.”

Katlo shut his eyes, trying to contain his frustration. “And what does that have to do with the insurgents?”

Now Tisla did smile. “The submarine’s destination was the island estate of one Archibald Sosnowski, the trillionaire maverick investor. He was last seen on Olympus purchasing, of all things, an ancient computer core with the same young women in tow.”

“This is getting ridiculous. Stop wasting my time. Find them and bring them in. I do not care who you have to torture, just get it done.” Katlo cut the connection as soon as he was finished.

“That went well,” Yasrin commented to Tisla as he leaned back in his chair. “We still have our jobs, so Katlo must still want these insurgents found. At least he understands the gravity of this situation.”

“All he understands is doing whatever it takes to hold on to power, no matter who he has to torture or kill in the process. Once we find them, we will finally have answers,” Tisla replied.

“It is not like you to talk in generalities. Who are you talking about? The insurgents? Those lookalike twits?” Yasrin prodded.

Tisla rolled her eyes. “Psionic powers are tools, not replacements for our brains. The insurgents, the identical twins, the Alba Varden, and now Archibald Sosnowski are all intertwined. Where you see chaos, I see conspiracy—a tangled skein that is under the surface, interconnected. The only aspect that troubles me is the lack of psionic residue. Whatever is at the heart of this enigma is something truly terrifying indeed.”

Yasrin didn’t answer. The possibilities behind her suggestion were too ominous to contemplate.
